Central Greece (elsewhere Mainland or Continental Greece), also known as Roumenli, is the second in size geographical district of Greece, divided into the prefectures of Aitoloakarnania, Voiotia (Euboia), Evrytania, Fthiotida ( Phtiotida), and Fokida (Phokida/Phokis/Phocis).
Endowed with amazing morphological alterations composed by imposing mountain ranges, dramatic gorges, impressive rivers and lakes, vast forests and dentelated beaches, waterfalls and sacred caves, most of them involved with some of the gold pages of Greek mythology and history, Central Greece is unquestionably an outstanding part of the Greece territory.
The celebrated Oracle of Delphi, the ancient city of Thebes, and Thermopylae, the Mt. Parnassus, the heroic city of Messologi, are only few of the internationally renowned sites that this region encompasses in its boundaries.
Central Greece, due to its diversified relief, is an ideal destination either for winter or summer vacations, since it offers innumerable options for exploration, outdoors activities such as mountainous or sea sports or just for relaxation.

Historical profile:
First settles of the Central Greece are be the Aeolians followed by the Achaeans, the Dolopes. The region played a crucial role to the Greek ancient history and in its land events took place such as the Battle of Thermopylae, of Plataies and of Leuktra. This was the birthplace of the legendary hero Hercules, of the tragic king Oedipus and of the Theban general Epaminondas.
In later centuries parts of its territory were dominated by the Romans, the Macedonians and the Ottomans.
The contribution in the Greek War of Independence was extremely important and heroes such as Athanasios Diakos, Markos Botsaris, Georgios Karaiskakis and also the philhellene Lord Byron bravely fought and died in this land.

Transportation from one place to the other can be done by local busses, however it is best to travel around the area by car. Many villages are either not accessible by bus or it is very time consuming to do so.
