Ionian islands
The Ionian are the greenest of the Greek Islands and with such sheltered harbours make the perfect place to potter around on the waters in motorboats.
The are famous for their crystal clear turquoise water and picturesque harbours as well as being the base for many of the myths and legends of Ancient Greece.
Cuendet have chosen the three lesser-visited island are Paxos, the smallest, Ithaca, home of Odysseus and traditional Lefkada to base their programme.
The smallest of the Ionian, Paxos, is probably the most tranquil of them, with hardly any cars on the island and 100 times more olive trees than there are people on the tiny island (8km x 4km) it is hardly surprising modern life as been left behind. Perfect for lazy days pottering around in the brilliant blue seas and hidden coves, visiting the white sandy island of Antipaxos, walking through the olive groves, or eating at the many waterside tavernas in the picturesque little harbours.
Ithaca is an island of haunting
beauty, little known and very Greek. From the island of capital of Vathy to the picturesque coastal village of Frikes and Kioni Ithaca retains its authenticity and charm. As well as some of the most stunning scenery in the Ionian, Ithaca has an array of tiny coves with crystal turquoise waters. Vathy has numerous waterside tavernas and an array of local shops.
Strongly traditional Lefkas is not an island where you need to go off the beaten track to experience authentic Greek life. Joined to the mainland only by a causeway, it is also superbly placed for hopping around the small islands dotted off the coast of Nidri, including the island retreat of the most famous Greek, Aristotle Onassis; Scorpios. Fabulous sandy beaches line the mountainous west coast while the east coast faces the mountains of the mainland. In the hills there are an array of traditional villages to explore.
