Lefkada island
The Island of Lefkada (Lefkas) has always amidst discussion as to whether or not it really is an island, as only joined by a causeway to the mainland. Ironically enough, once actually there, you feel more the pace and the authenticity of island life than many of the more popular island destinations. ‘Traditional’ is a word that is widely used to describe Lefkas, although a trip to the villages will ensure spying at least a few donkeys carrying firewood, elderly ladies in traditional dress carrying baskets on their heads and traditional working villages, you actually don’t have to go very far to see such sights.
Lefkada boasts not only some of the best beaches in Greece, Porto Katsiki and Milos, but some of the best in Europe while it also has wonderful little coves and crystal clear waters to choose from. A great favourite amongst sailors and windsurfers who head down to the island southern most point of Vassiliki, famous for its sea breeze and safe waters to learn.
The island was a great favourite of the Greek Tycoon, Aristotle Onassis and for many years his private island, Scorpios; just off the coast of Nidri, was a playground of the rich and famous. Scorpios is just one of the little islands that gather around the bay, notorious for its schools of dolphins, and a perfect day out on the island means hopping over to Meganisi for lunch, or perhaps taking a speedboat tour around the islets and stopping for lunch and a swim.
The evening will surely find you watching the spectacular sunset from one of the waterside cafeterias in Lefkas town, planning which of the many fish taverns you will have supper!
