Tips on Cyclades
Here is what you need to know before arranging your trip to Cyclades islands. These tips will help you make the most of your holiday days and spend as little money as possible.
Getting to Cyclades by plane (where available)
There are planes for specific Cycladic islands only, so be well informed.
Our Tip
Book your plane tickets well ahead or it is highly unlikely that you will find available seats. Sometimes, especially during weekends, planes are fully booked as early as 2 months before. Be at the airport early enough (1 hour before departure). Check for available seats online, this is the fastest way to book.
Getting to Cyclades by ferry
There are 3 kinds of ferries going to the Cyclades. The standard ferry (Blue Star or other older ferries), the High Speed and sometimes the Flying Dolphins which interconnect the islands. Other local boats, smaller in size also interconnect the Cycladic islands. Some of these make just daily trips to the nearby islands.
Our Tip
Here is what you need to know before deciding which boat to select:
- If you also wish to transfer a vehicle, please make sure that the boat you select is indeed a car ferry. Do that for all the islands you wish to visit or you may find out that you will have to leave your car/motorbike behind in order to visit one of the islands.
- During weekends and for Friday afternoon transfers, make sure you book well ahead when travelling during middle and high season. Most Greeks tend to take weekend holiday breaks and travel around the islands, so availability may be very limited.
Travel cost
How to spend less money on your journey:
Our Tip
There is no need to spend a fortune if you can avoid it. Ferry tickets are becoming more expensive every year, so here are some ideas on how to cut down expenses:
- For short stay trips, it might be cheaper to rent a car when arriving at the island of your choice than bringing your own.
- However, during middle and high season make sure you book the car well ahead.
Rental Car and motorbike safety precautions
It is best not to have an accident when you are on holidays; we will all agree with that. Here are a few steps to ensure that we can avoid accidents caused by the vehicle itself.
Our Tip
We have to make sure that the vehicle we rent is in excellent condition. Most vehicle rental companies in Greece have indeed brand new cars and motorbikes and they are forced by the Greek law to do so.
However, these vehicles have sometimes been treated badly by previous people who rented them and it is sometimes hard to see if something is wrong with them, so:
- Check if the car has everything you need to change a tire, in case you find yourselves in the middle of nowhere.
- If you are to visit remote areas with dirt road, it is best to hire a 4x4 vehicle and always keep in mind that insurance will not cover damages that occured in non asphalt roads or other roads of very good condition. Your rental office will inform you of that but if not, please ask them.
- Check thourougly the condition of your car or motorbike (brakes, tires, seat belts) before leaving the rental office. If something is wrong, ask for another vehicle.
- Make sure there si water for cleanong the front window of the car; you will need it.
