Tips on Attica

It seems you are seriously thinking of visiting Attica, including Athens and its suburbs. Well, aren't you lucky! Here is what you need to know before you start your journey, so that you make sure you enjoy everything and have a trouble free visit.

Traffic in Athens and Attica
You must have heard a lot about traffic in Athens but we still need to tell you this: it is not going to be easy! Just like in any other big city, traffic in Athens can be very unpredictable. Peak hours are around 8:00 and for at least 1.5 hour and around 17:00 for about 1 hour. This is when people go to work and come back.

But that's not all. Greeks love to go out at night. We know that there is an economic recession all over Europe and it most definitely affects Greece as well BUT it does not affect the Greeks; not all of them anyway. There are hundreds of taverns and coffe bars in each neighborhood and they do get crowded even during weekdays. This extends the traffic hours.

Tip of the day
Life is too short and traffic in Athens is for granted. So don't worry about it, take with you a nice CD with relaxing music, open your car window, look to your left, look to your right and ... who knows, you may even make friends along the way !!!
Traffic is for sure a major social event.
Just don't forget to ask yourself this: "Do I really want to go there?"
Getting around in Athens and Attica
How do we escape from city traffic? You may take a bus; this is a very good solution to the problem described right above. Busses tend to go faster than cars in most cases because they have an entire lane to use where no cars or motorbikes are allowed to use unless they are to take the next turn. In most cases this works pretty well. Don't expect miracles of course!

A combination of bus + metro may get you where you want to go even faster. The metro has a very punctuate schedule so we advise that you use this if it can get you where you want to go instead of any other transportation method.

Tip of the day
We did say that there is a lane dedicated to busses only in most major streets of Athens but this is not 100% true. The Greeks have this tendency to disobey traffic rules and that is what they do in this case. Some may even decide to park there !!! Nothing to worry about, they will come back in less than 1 hour; not much of a delay after all.
In that case, with you being the tourist, Greek or non Greek, a bus ride is an excellent opportunity to finish reading this book you have started about 2 months ago. There is no excuse now, you know it.
